Before transitioning back into civilian life, I was given the opportunity to consult about a program assisting military personnel to become teachers. It was something I placed in the back of my mind as I retired from the Navy and my overseas employment service. After moving to Oklahoma to care for my father, I began substitute teaching at a local technology center; as well as, Stonebridge Academy. I found that I enjoyed working with the middle school students and felt I could really offer them an insightful learning experience. I pursued the Troops to Teachers Program and I am currently finishing my Teaching Certification.
Students should be the main focus for any teacher. They should be the constant front and center, number one priority for all educational personnel. If students realize how much you care for them, as a whole person, they will gain the confidence to express themselves, accept themselves and embrace the differences of others. I want to create an atmosphere where my students feel comfortable enough to just be themselves. This environment will provide for students to share their ideas, collaborate, take risks, make mistakes, increase their natural curiosity of the world around them, and ultimately learn. I want their learning to be fun, but I take my time and responsibility with my students very serious. I believe what they are learning now will affect everything they do for the rest of their lives. Being in the situation I am, allows me to focus on the education of the kids. Our daily lessons, classroom work and out of class assignments provide for active student engagement through hands-on activities, interactive & collaborative STEM projects and individual learning time.
I feel that technology is an imperative element in the classroom. It can be used as an essential component in cooperative and individual problem solving. I want to use my years of technological experience and world travels to find the most modern teaching tools and educational strategies. These indispensable approaches will aid in creating projects that require the kids to explore global issues, methods of creating solutions in a community driven environment, and develop critical thinking skills.
My goal is to introduce ideas that will help prepare them for high school, potential career paths, and life decisions. I ask that you join me in preparing them for their future.
